This time round, we're shaking things up with our program by introducing hands-on and interactive elements. Picture this: instead of the typical Kahoot game, we're bringing in engaging activities like investing-themed charades, investing concept Pictionary, and much more! The best part? Our gameshow format is versatile enough to educate on a wide range of topics, from investing and sustainability to entrepreneurship and beyond. Get ready for a fun and educational experience like never before!
On May 8th, 2024, we were thrilled to host our inaugural Value Investing Investing Tonight Show with the students. Despite their ages ranging from 16 to 18 years old, we were genuinely impressed by their enthusiasm and grasp of investing concepts. It was truly inspiring to witness their engagement and comprehension during the session.
First, Persis, our Business Manager introduced Next Gen and Joshua hosted the game show.
We then kicked off the session with an insightful presentation from our co-founder, Tiffany Liu, who also serves as an Investment Professional at Star Magnolia Capital. She delved into the fundamentals of Value Investing, providing valuable insights. Please find the slides attached for your perusal.
Tiffany explained the basics of investing, breaking down what stocks are and what makes a good investment. She tailored her insights for students aged 15-18, making it simpler for them to understand the importance of assessing a company's value. Tiffany also discussed different approaches students can use to choose stocks they might want to buy. Using McDonald's as an example, she showed how the company actually makes its money from real estate instead of selling of burgers, as one may think.
During the session, we assigned the students to read Chapter 25 of INVEST!, which delves into an interview conducted by Qian and his investing team with Mr. Huang, the CEO of X.D. Network. The chapter explores the significant impact a CEO's actions can have on a company. Following the reading, we facilitated group discussions where students debated whether they would consider purchasing X.D. Network's stock. Representatives from each group then had the opportunity to articulate their thought processes and reasoning behind their investment decisions. It was a valuable exercise in critical thinking and investment analysis, allowing students to apply theoretical concepts to real-world scenarios.
We swapped things around this time with Stock Market Charades as our second act, so that we could ensure the students were familiar with Value Investing concepts. Stock Market Charades is very straightforward as its name suggests. We use action cards that are Value Investing related and students have to act out these terms for their teams to guess.
All good things come to an end. Please find some of the feedback from the students after the session:
We would love to run more Investing Tonight Shows for your club or students, ranging from junior colleges to polytechnics and universities!
Do check out our Substack as well for more information about NextGen, as we also post about different things, like quarterly letters from our club leaders, or initial memos on companies that our members have researched on.
