Meet the Investor - Singapore Live
Arguably the biggest and most exciting in-person event held in Singapore for 2022 yet!
This was arguably the biggest and most exciting in-person event held in Singapore for 2022 yet!
On 19 November 2022, Arisaig Partners opened up their cosy office to welcome students from the Z Club as well as professional investors from various sectors.
Here are their names, just to name a few:
Gordon Yeo, Arisaig Partners
Dennis Hong, ShawSpring Partners
Lester Goh, ShawSpring Partners
Michael Gilmore, Albizia Capital
Daniel Phua, Foord Asset Management
Alexander Koh, Temasek
The morning kicked off with an introduction to Next Gen Investors Endowment and the Z Club from yours truly. I certainly had fun calling out names in the audience too ;)
Following that, Pearline PANG (EIP 2023 Vice-Chairman) conducted an entertaining, informative and personal interview with Gordon and Dennis as they candidly shared their investors' journey, personal successes and failures and words of advice for the next generation of budding investors.
In fact, 4 students were so impacted by the interview that they wrote reflections on it. Here are the excerpts and full length reflections for your perusal. Hopefully these reflections also inspire you to think through what you have learnt and you can also form your own opinions on the matter.
"Having the ability to see things at different levels of analysis and possessing a more nuanced understanding of the pros and cons of a business requires intellectual humility, to actively seek out, respect and truly digest opinions different from one’s own thesis. As long term investors, it is especially critical to spend more time thinking about what can go wrong for a great business than what can go right for it." - Jing Zhe ANG

"I believe that for us young investors who are still green behind the ears, it would be to our benefit to reach out to investment professionals to learn the hurdles faced and mistakes they made. Chatting with well-versed mentors provides additional viewpoints that would not have been considered otherwise and also fosters connections. Ultimately, the business of fund management is underpinned by trust and speaking with such investors provides additional sensing on the type of character and traits that each different fund manager focuses on and the personality they exude." - Jon Lon YIONG
Reflections (Jon Lon YIONG).pdf
"Everyone has a Blindspot. This highlights the importance of constantly seeking out what I do not know. While I find it extremely uncomfortable and at times demoralising to realise that I do not know a lot, I have greater confidence now that this may not be necessarily a bad thing." - Dean TAY
"Being humbly open to new experiences and accepting new people, views, scenarios, and knowledge is essential. While not necessary to pay back immediately (or at all), it is a great way to achieve "luck." It is also why simply talking to people and listening carefully with an open mind should be a surprisingly rewarding habit." - Ofir BAR
What is a solid event without food and good conversations? Here we had a short but FULL-filling break with loads of Chewing and Chatter! Psst...can you spot a guest appearance? ;)

With that, MTI Singapore Live was a success! Thank you so much to Arisaig for opening up their office, to Gordon and Dennis for sharing their experiences and heart, to all the investors for gracing the occasion and to the students for your enthusiastic participation!
We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and cannot wait for the next in-person event!
