Investing Tonight Show with North London Collegiate School (Singapore) - Blockchain Edition
It was another educational and fun-filled session with North London Collegiate School (Singapore) as students learnt about a topic that they were deeply interested about.
We are back with a second round of our Investing Tonight Show (ITS) with North London Collegiate School (Singapore) (NLCS), this time hosting a Blockchain edition!
NLCS Singapore is renowned for its international education standards, fostering academic excellence, and cultivating a culture of intellectual growth. At NLCS Singapore, they aim to deliver an exceptional educational experience, rooted in the rich traditions, ethos, and practices of North London Collegiate School, UK.
In May 2024, we visited NLCS Singapore for the first time to host ITS - Value Investing edition. Read here to find out what went down.
This month, we are honoured to have a special guest with us to present a lecture on this interesting but complex topic - cryptocurrency and blockchain.
Daniel Chu is the Chief Investment Office at a Singapore family office. He also used to work at Goldman Sachs and Bank of America Merrill Lynch. Currently, he specialises in investing in digital assets for the family office. Therefore it was a no-brainer to invite him to share his knowledge and expertise with the students - and boy did they have fun!
Beyond sharing the foundation of blockchain technology such as decentralization, Daniel also weaved in use cases of cryptocurrency where Stablecoins (cryptocurrencies pegged to traditional currencies like the US Dollar) allow individuals from third-world countries to save in a currency that maintains its value and to remit money cheaply and quickly.
Daniel also expounded on blockchain smart contracts that are self-executing contracts programmed to carry out specific actions, like automatically releasing funds when conditions are met. These smart contracts could transform real estate, insurance, and many other industries.
Memecoins would be something the students are familiar with. Many of them could recognise Doge and Pepe. Daniel introduced the concept of Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) and how many people use AI to generate content. Finally, Daniel ended his sharing with advice on safe investment practices.
It was no wonder that students and teachers alike had so many questions for Daniel that his time overran!
This time, we assigned the students to read Chapter 30 of INVEST!, which explains more about NFTs and the metaverse. Students could also learn what 'first penguin' means in the context of investing and venture capital. Through reading this chapter, students were encouraged to discuss and ponder upon what the metaverse really means and whether they would invest in the metaverse themselves.
Finally, to end off the session on a high, we played Blockchain Pictionary! Blockchain Pictionary is very straightforward as its name suggests. We used action cards that are Blockchain related and students have to draw out these terms for their teams to guess. The classroom was filled with laughter and shouts as students tried to draw the words to the best of their ability.
Similar to the last session, the average age of participants is 15.4 years old. We also received the following scores (out of 5) for the respective segments:
Speaker's presentation: 4.29
Pictionary: 4.14
Investoon reading: 4.29
We thank Daniel for taking time out of his busy schedule to come share with NLCS Singapore about blockchain and cryptocurrency as well as NLCS Singapore for allowing us to be able to host the Investing Tonight Show again! We would love to run more Investing Tonight Shows for your club or students, ranging from junior colleges to polytechnics and universities!
